The guild started as a BBS called The Sin Bin in 1993.
We will have to sit down and write up the history from the days of the BBS to when we moved into MMO's and other games.

Until I get that written here is is the history of how we moved to the name Legion of Qui as written by Qui Lo.

I can't believe I found this. Was going through some old CD's when I found a backup of old documents from a few years ago. I figured I'd share this one with you, for those that were there, and those that came after and might not know:

From 15 Nov 2001:

"Ok so Tsun has been bugging me for a history of LoQ, so here it is (mostly):

In the beginning, the earth was formless and void.. Oh no wait, wrong history, let’s jump forward a few hundred thousand years or so:

Tsun and I had been friends for about 5 years or so, and had played pretty much every multiplayer game out there (I first met Todd at one of his weekly LAN parties, playing Doom, C&C, Rise of the Triad, and anything else that we could get working), but hadn’t really done much in the way of MMORPGs beyond MUDs. So one night while drinking (something I did on a nightly basis back then), I thought it would be fun if we got into one. I had played the beta of Asheron’s Call awhile back, but, due to its popularity at the time, we decided on Everquest.

So, in the interest of time, let me just say that EQ was not a fun experience. Back then the interface took up ¾ of the screen, the graphics were crap, and the people we met not overly helpful. It took forever to get anywhere, and, well, I could go on and on, but I won’t bore you with those details. It clearly wasn’t the game for me, but I had talked Tsun into playing it, so I was sticking with it.

Then one afternoon I was at the local EB, and saw Asheron’s Call sitting there on the shelf. I remembered it as being kinda cool when I played it in beta, so I went ahead and bought it. I decided I would just play it on the side, and not tell Tsun. I’d just keep playing EQ with him when he was on, and play AC when he wasn’t around.

So without hesitation, I installed the game and fired it up. In typical engineer fashion, I chose to forgo reading the manual, and plunged right in. My first toon, Shodan, was a “custom” template. I was spec’ed in sword and axe, trained in bow and staves, and, well you get the idea, a complete gimp. But I was excited and thought I had the makings of a great fighter so off I went.

After rolling through the tutorial (I know I know, you’re asking yourself what the hell this has to do with the creation of the Loq, I’m getting there, I promise), I made my way to Shoushi, where I was immediately inundated with offers of patronage. After talking to a few people, I decided on Mr. Dorritos (awesome name did it for me). He hooked me up with what I thought at the time was some sweet gear (hey! My sword has fire coming off it! KICKASS!), and pointed me in the direction of the nearest dungeon, and off I went.

So I hacked and slashed through the dungeon for a bit, and then decided to roam the wilderness. Somewhere along the way I got killed (a whole buncha times). Now my “uber” gear was scattered across central Dereth, and I had no way to get it back. I was so embarrassed that I lost all that gear, I deleted my toon rather than face the wrath of Mr. Dorritos. Hence Mordin was born, an exact clone of Shodan.

After a little tentative wandering around as Mordin, I got a tell from Kui Po, asking me if I was looking for a patron. We talked for a bit, and I decided to swear to him, as he was the higest level toon I had seen at the time (A mighty level 28 he was). After I swore, he asked me what template I was using, which drew blank stares from me. Eventually I figured out what he was asking, so I told him how I customized to make a badass fighter.

“Man, you are seriously gimped” he replied, after hearing my build out. He then proceeded to explain to me why my choices were no good, and recommended a proper fighter build out for AC. He told me to re-roll and meet him back at Shoushi when I was done. And thus Mordin met his untimely end.

Now, given that Po had been so helpful (and that I was running out of names), I decided as a thank you of sorts that I would take part of his name and incorporate it into mine. Unfortunately, my short term memory is not what it should be (don’t do drugs kids, just say no), so I couldn’t remember if his name was Kui Po or Qui Po. I finally decided it had to be Qui (since Kui just sounded funny). And thus Qui Lo sprung forth into Dereth.

And was immediately embarrassed to find out that he chose poorly. But at this point I had had enough of re-rolling and was anxious to get started, so I said hell with it and went on. Po hooked me up with some gear, gave me some tips on where to hunt and how to get around, and pretty much left me to my own devices (which is what I wanted out of a patron. No fun in being hand-held through a new experience). I was hooked, slaying drudges left and right, running around like a fool, dying everywhere, and just generally having a good time. Which led to a dilemma: what about EQ and Tsun?

As I was playing AC more and more, I was playing EQ less and less. Eventually I knew I wasn’t going to be able to keep pretending to be into EQ. So I broke down and told Tsun that I was going over to AC. He was very understanding (once I bought him a copy of AC of course).

So now there were two Qui in Dereth: Qui Lo and Qui Tsun (I had the idea that we both have the “Qui” in the name). Soon our friend ChumpyD joined (Qui Chum Pi), and not long after that we started pulling in more and more friends and co-workers. We had quite a gaggle of Qui.

During this early time, we were members of the Olympians, one of the largest (at the time) guilds on Solclaim. We started going to the Monday night meetings together, dressed in purple robes and skull masks, and people started noticing all the Qui hanging out together. Someone asked “what’s with all the Qui”, and I jokingly replied “we’re not a group, we’re a legion”. And thus the idea of the Legion of Qui was born. People would jokingly refer to us as The Legion of Qui, the mini-guild.

We spent the next several months in the Olympians, hanging out with Po and his patron Darryl (the mac-daddy), doing the Monday night quests, and generally having a good time. But things started to get rocky in the Olympians, and many of us felt that Apollo, the leader of the guild, was started to get a bit overbearing. So Tsun and I started talking about leaving the Olympians and making the LoQ a guild of its own. We talked to the friends we had brought into the game, and they were all for it. The next thing to do was see if Po would be up for it (I wasn’t going to split from Po).

Po seemed to like the idea, but was unwilling to make the split unless Darryl was ok with it. Darryl was more than ok with it, he wanted to join us as well. So we had a meeting with Darryl’s other vassals (too many to mention them all, but of note Chris Bloodmane, Crook, Arthell, and all the Gambits in the UK). Things were a bit heated at times (the fact that many people didn’t have Qui in their names, who would run the guild, the usual guild formation stuff), but eventually we got everything ironed out, and most of Darryl’s vassals agreed to come along.

Now that we had everyone on board, the next step was going to be to create a toon named Legion of Qui, powerlevel him up, and start swearing people under him. Once we had that done, we would split from the Olympians. Unfortunately, things got heated between me and Apollo, Darryl and Apollo, and Tsun and Apollo, so things got escalated. I created a toon called Legion of Qui, went out to Mayoi, and /suicided myself to form the words “f*** YOU” in corpses. At that point we were pretty much done with the Olympians, and the Legion of Darryl was born.

Huh? Darryl? I thought this was the Legion of Qui? Is what you’re probably asking yourself right about now. Well, the problem then was that Darryl was well into his 60’s at the time, and Legion of Qui (Tsun purchased a second account so we could have a proper Legion of Qui monarch) was still in his early teens. So it took a whole lot of work and shuffling and patience from a whole lot of people to get it done. But eventually we did get it done. In between we built this website, got the forums up, added a whole lot of new friends, crushed many a quest (or died on many a quest in my case). And with the new expansion on the horizon, it looks like we’ve got many new AC adventures to look forward to."

brings back some memories, don't it?
